Steps to Miles Calculator
Convert your steps to miles (or miles to steps) using your height.
Stride length is estimated from height. For the most accurate result, measure your own stride: walk 10 steps, measure the distance in feet, and divide by 10.
How Many Steps Are in a Mile?
For most adults, a mile is roughly 2,000 to 2,500 walking steps. The exact number depends on your stride length, which is mostly tied to your height. Running strides are longer, so a mile takes fewer running steps.

| 5'0" | 2.06 ft | about 2,560 |

How Far Is 10,000 Steps?
For most people, 10,000 steps is about 4 to 5 miles. At a moderate pace of 3 miles per hour, that's roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes to 1 hour and 40 minutes of walking spread across your day. See the full chart in how many miles is 10,000 steps and how many steps is 3 miles.
How the Calculator Works
The calculator estimates your stride length from your height. A common rule of thumb is that walking stride length is about 41% of your height. It then divides the number of inches in a mile (63,360) by your stride to get steps per mile.
To measure your own stride: walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance in feet, and divide by 10. Most fitness trackers let you enter this number for better accuracy.
Do You Really Need 10,000 Steps a Day?
The 10,000-step goal is a popular target, not a medical rule. Research suggests health benefits start well below that, and that more daily steps are linked with lower health risks up to a point. For general health, the U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, such as brisk walking, plus muscle-strengthening activity on 2 or more days. If you're starting from very little activity, adding even 1,000 to 2,000 steps a day is a good first goal.
