Your weight doesn’t tell you how much of it is fat and how much is muscle. Body fat percentage does. This free body fat calculator for women uses the U.S. Navy method: all you need is a soft tape measure and two minutes.

Measure your neck, waist and hips, enter your height, and add your weight if you’d like to see your fat and lean mass. For another view of belly fat, try the waist-to-hip ratio calculator.

Body Fat Calculator for Women

Estimate your body fat percentage with a tape measure, using the U.S. Navy method.

Please check your measurements. Waist plus hips must be larger than your neck.

The U.S. Navy method is usually within a few percentage points of lab methods like DEXA, but results depend on careful measuring. Measure in the morning, on bare skin, with the tape snug but not tight.

How to Measure for the Calculator

Use a soft, flexible tape measure on bare skin. Keep it snug but not tight, and level all the way around.

  1. Neck: just below your larynx (voice box), with the tape sloping slightly down toward the front.
  2. Waist: at the narrowest point of your torso, usually just above your belly button. Breathe out normally.
  3. Hips: at the widest part of your buttocks, with your feet together.
  4. Height: standing straight against a wall, without shoes.

Measure each one twice and use the average. Measuring at the same time of day (morning is best) makes it easier to track changes.

40 to 5923 to 33%
60 to 7924 to 35%

Why Body Fat Matters More Than Weight After 40

  • Muscle loss hides in the scale. Women lose muscle with age, so weight can stay the same while body fat rises.
  • Menopause moves fat to the waist. Belly fat is linked with higher risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The calculator also shows your waist-to-hip ratio and waist size for this reason.
  • Strength training changes the picture. Building muscle can lower your body fat even if your weight doesn’t change much.

How Accurate Is the Navy Method?

The U.S. Navy method is a practical home estimate. Studies show it’s usually within a few percentage points of lab methods like DEXA scans, but small measuring mistakes can shift the result. Use it to track your own trend over time, not to compare yourself with others.

For a clinical measurement, ask your doctor about a DEXA scan, which also measures bone density, useful after menopause. See how to protect your bones after 40.
