How the Chart Works
The chart is based on body mass index (BMI), which compares your weight to your height. The CDC and NIH use these adult ranges:
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Under 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 to 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25 to 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 or higher | Obesity |
The weights in the chart are simply the weights that match those BMI numbers at each height.
Is There a Weight Chart for Women by Age?
For adults, the healthy BMI range is the same at every age, so the chart doesn’t change between 25 and 65. What does change with age is body composition: women tend to lose muscle and gain fat around the waist after 40, even if their weight stays the same.
Some research suggests a BMI slightly above 25 may not carry extra risk for adults over 65. If you’re older, talk with your doctor about the right range for you.
Why Weight Alone Isn’t the Whole Story
BMI is a quick screening tool, but it doesn’t measure muscle, bone or where fat is stored. Two women with the same height and weight can have very different health.

What If You’re Above the Healthy Range?
You don’t need to reach the middle of the range to improve your health. Losing just 5% to 10% of your body weight can lower blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol.
